As you are taking in the beauty all around you, you are also breathing in deep some of the cleanest air you will find and hear the sounds of nature- birds and insects, wind and water.


Nature can rejuvenate your soul and reinvigorate your mental state. Viewing natural beauty can bring about feelings of awe, which can release endorphins and trigger a mental boost. Here, in the Clarence Valley, we are blessed with many magnificent areas easily explored in a day trip.


We can gain a sense of accomplishment by being exposed to new situations and challenging ourselves. Walking in nature can create good feelings, combined with visiting new places, and learning new skills you can gain a real sense of personal achievement. Adventure can bring you awareness of your inner self, giving you the chance to examine and challenge yourself in new ways. Visiting the unknown and taking a risk demands our increased attention not only to our surroundings but also to our selves and we often return home with a more relaxed mind and an increase in self-confidence.


Being in nature can also make you smarter. Immersing yourself in the outdoors can increase your higher-order cognition, studies found brain scans taken after exercise showed the participants had greater and more focused activity in the prefrontal cortex than they did before. Getting out there can help increase activity in your hippocampus, the brain’s main storage unit. Often, the hippocampus decreases as you get older, leading to memory loss, however physical outdoor activity can lead to a chemical reaction in the body that increases the hippocampus. A group of middle-aged adults took a 40-minute walk three times a week and over a year, grew their hippocampi by two per cent.
