Independent Decision Making

Creative Care is strongly committed to inclusion and the protection of the rights of people with disability. I actively promote and protect individual rights including freedom of expression, self-determination and decision making.

Assisting, or supporting, someone to make a decision means giving them the tools they need to make the decision for themself. It is about supporting them to make their own decision, and in doing so, safeguarding their autonomy. It does not mean making the decision for them. A person's right to make decisions is fundamental to their independence and dignity.

Creative Care respects the rights of people with disability in exercising choice and control about matters that affect them. Through discussing, listening and checking back in with the client and other concerned people when appropriate I ensure my clients have active choice and control at all times.

All people including those with disability have the capacity to make decisions, exercise choice, and provide informed consent. Clients are supported to develop their capacity to make independent decisions. Timely information is provided in an appropriate way to support informed decision making including people’s rights and responsibilities.

Choice includes smaller decisions about everyday living through to more complex consultation on co-design of service. I endeavour to support all clients of Creative Care in a way that is appropriate to their circumstances and cultural needs and maximise opportunities to make choices and have control over decisions that affect their lives.
